Occupational Health and Safety Improvement Project of Şırnak Asphaltite Mines

Grant Beneficiary Institution: Şırnak University

Lot and Sector Information: Lot 1/Mining/Asphaltite Mining Sector

Project Stakeholders: (Co-Applicant) Şırnak Chamber of Commerce and Industry

Project Duration: 15 Months

Total Project Budget: EUR 157,466.40

Implementation Areas:Province of Şırnak and its districts

Project Objectives: The objectives of the project are to;

  • Raise awareness of occupational health and safety (OHS) among all relevant groups, stakeholders and families of the employees in the mining sector,
  • Create a unique action plan and OHS procedures to be implemented in Şırnak asphaltite mines,
  • Increase the institutional capacity of the relevant actors (target groups, NGOs, public and private organisations) in the province on OHS studies,
  • Increase the human resources capacity of target groups and relevant actors (university, NGOs, public and private institutions) in OHS studies;
  • Raise awareness and increase capacity for the reclamation of degraded mining areas and to develop cooperation among stakeholders.

Activities / Outputs: Occupational health and safety workshops and trainings will be held in the province of Şırnak and its districts for public and private institutions, occupational safety experts, employers and employees and the families of employees. It is aimed to develop occupational health and safety conditions and implement compatible inclusive strategies, to create an occupational health and safety culture and to strengthen the current situation capacity in mining sites in Şırnak.

According to the Occupational Health and Safety Law No. 6331, risk analyses will be assessed in 2 workplaces and mining pits. It is aimed to identify the deficiencies in the law and in practice, to help correct them, and to prepare a new risk analysis. Mining companies abroad will be visited to raise the occupational health and safety practices in Turkey to the level of EU countries and to observe examples of good practice.

All prepared documents and visual materials will be delivered to the relevant companies.

Production Planning in Şırnak Asphaltite Quarries, general mine design for Open pits, slope stability, height and width of steps, suitability of the excavation equipment, and the hydrogeological condition of the mines will be examined in 2 pilot mining companies. For the underground mine, the design of the mine, the underground production method, the ventilation of the mine, the mine supports used both in the production areas and on the main roads will be examined. After these examinations, assessment reports will be presented to the target companies whose quarries have been examined. Within the scope of this study, detailed field surveys will be carried out and the results of the surveys will be interpreted together with the project team and the most suitable design will be proposed to the enterprises. Modern, environment-friendly and green mining studies will be carried out for reclamation of the used mine sites through the implementation of a Reclamation Project, which is included in the Feasibility Study. A group of project participants will visit the used mine areas and conduct the reclamation study, and with this study, the environmental sensitivity and awareness of the people in the region, the relevant public institutions and mining companies that produce in the environment will be increased. General information about mining studies in Şırnak-Silopi region, modern engineering practices, slope stability analysis, and hydrogeological studies will be presented.
