Project Objectives: The objectives are to determine the preventive measures for other occupational diseases, especially silicosis which employees in dental prosthesis laboratories experience as a result of being exposed to chemical risks and physical factors such as noise, with pilot implementations, to determine noise control measures, to bring laboratories in compliance with occupational health and safety legislation and raising the OHS awareness of the employees in prosthesis laboratories by improving the physical conditions of the laboratories together with the parties related to the sector.
Activities / Outputs: Activities to be carried out;
- A current situation analysis (assessment of the working environment in the workplace and the health status of the employees and general information) will be made for 900 employees working in 160 dental prosthesis laboratories (prioritising those who have more employees) in Istanbul Fatih, where dental prosthesis laboratories are concentrated. A meeting will be held with the employers of the selected laboratories and information will be given about the project objectives and activities.
- In selected laboratories, physical conditions, ventilation, chemicals, training, health reports, personal protective equipment, work equipment, pressure vessels, sandblaster safety, workplace layout and ergonomics, compressors, warning signs and fire safety will be assessed and OHS knowledge and competencies of employees, employers and managers will be determined.
- Activities to improve physical conditions will be carried out in 8 laboratories selected for pilot schemes and the results will be used in modeling studies.
- In line with the results of the current situation analysis study, improvement and regulation studies covering 50 employees and 8 pilot laboratories will be carried out and the results will be reported as examples of good practice.
- Training courses and workshops will be organised to raise the awareness of employees and employers. A training of trainers programme will be carried out for opinion leaders in the sector with the approach of “collaborative learning”. A total of 45 hours of training of trainers will be given to a group of 12-20 people, primarily the participants from the pilot scheme points. In addition, 2, 4 and 5-day trainings will be organised in 4 groups.
- In order to increase knowledge and raise awareness, a “Workshop on the Health of Dental Technicians” will be held with the participation of employees, employers, academicians in the sector and representatives from the industry.
- Within the scope of the broadcast and visibility activities plan, a film promoting and explaining the sector, posters, press news and bulletin, a web page under Association for Human Health and Education’s (INSEV) website will be prepared and a “Safe Workplace Culture Table” will be sent to 160 laboratories.
Expected outputs:
- Current situation analyses will be carried out in 160 laboratories where 900 people work and 50 employees selected from this group will be trained.
- Pilot implementation and modeling studies will be carried out in 8 laboratories selected among 160 laboratories where the assessment study was carried out.
- Qualified trainings will be provided by including 160 employers in the research process and workshops will be held with 8 employers from this group.
- Employee-oriented improvement studies will be carried out in order to create a physical and “safe workplace culture” in the workplaces.
- A training programme for trainers (5 days x 8 hours x 1 group) will be organised for a group of 12-20 people who are opinion leaders. In addition, trainings will be provided for employees (4 days x 6 hours x 2 groups) and for employers (2 days x 6 hours x 1 group).
- Physical measurements (ventilation) will be carried out in pilot workplaces and a model implementation report will be prepared in accordance with the results. In addition, in order to disseminate the model in the sector, a proposal document will be prepared and delivered to the relevant parties in the sector by using media tools.
- A workshop will be held with a group of 200 people consisting of academic parties, and representatives from the sector and relevant institutions.
